Breakfast challenge USA vs Japan

Hello Everybody!

For me the weekend mornings (Saturday and Sunday) are the only morning in which I can prepare some particular dishes for our breakfast. Today, I’ll show you what I prepared one week ago. Last Sunday morning I cooked 2 dishes  taken by two very different traditions, and I compared them in a sort of challenge for the best breakfast dish! Like in every challenge I needed a judge and my husband has volunteered to act as a judge! The challengers are: in one corner a classic American breakfast food and in the opposite corner a typical Japanese  food…

The challenge is Pancake VS Dorayaki!

Dorayaky With Nutella

doraemonFor those of you who are born in 80s years, the dorayaki are the famous sandwiches that the cat Doraemon loved so much! For those of you that don’t know Doraemon cartoon, the dorayaki are a kind of japanese version of pancakes. Actually they are a special sandwiches with chocolate inside really soft and good tasting. They are simply and really quick to prepare!

Ingredients for 6 dorayaki:

  • 100 gr of flour;
  • 50 gr of sugar;
  • 2 eggs;
  • 1 teaspoon of honey;Ingredients
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder;
  • 2 table spoon of water;
  • Nutella
  • A tiny amount of butter for oiling the frying pan.

Useful tools:

  • Terrine (I used the beaker of my hand blender kit);
  • Electric whisk;
  • Frying pan;
  • Tool for reverse the dorayaki during the cooking.

Procedure:

I used my breaker of my hand blender kit instead a terrine. I put in my container all the ingredients in the following order: at first the flour, Procedureafter that the sugar, then the eggs, the baking powder and at last the honey and the water. I mixed all the ingredients with my electric whisk until the mixture had no clumps and it was like a thick liquid. I put my pan on the stove and I oiled it with some butter and I removed the excess butter with some blotting paper. When the pan was hot i put a little amount of my mixture on it and after few minutes i turn it on the other side. The dorayaki appearance must be gold and not burned! There are two things in which you have to pay attention: the color of the dorayaky (gold brown) and the inside status of cooking. My suggestion is to cook the dorayaky until the color is good and after that leave it in the hot pan and turn from one side to another often. In this way your dorayaki is able to cook inside but he doesn’t burn the surface.

Second sideOne side

When my dorayaki were ready, I spread some nutella on one of it and I put another dorayaki on the top… exactly like a sandwich! Remember you should serve the dorayaky warm!

Pancakes With Maple Syrup

Also this recipe is really easy to make, but there are some additional steps compared to the previous one. There are also a lot of variation of this recipe, but the one I’m going to show you is the original and traditional recipe .

Ingredients for 10 pancakes:

  • 125 gr of flour;
    Ingredients
  • 25 gr of butter;
  • 2 eggs;
  • 15 gr of sugar;
  • 200 ml of milk;
  • 6 gr of baking powder;
  • Maple syrup (or honey).

Useful tools:

  • Terrines;
  • Electric Whisk;
  • Spatula;
  • Small pot;
  • Tool for reverse the pancake during the cooking;
  • Frying pan.

Procedure:

At first, I liquefied the butter in a small pot. In the meantime I divided the albumens from yolks and I put the yolks in a terrina. I mixed the Procedureyolks with the whisk and I added the butter and later the milk. I blended the mixture until it was uniform. I added the flour, and the baking powder and I mixed again with my whisk. In a different terrine i put my albumens and the sugar and I beat until stiff with my whisk. When they were ready I added them gently in the first terrine and I blended the new mixture very carefully from bottom to top, with a spatula. I put the frying pan on the stove and I oiled it with some butter, whr the pan was hot i put some mixture inside and I waited. At this moment you can notice that there are some bubbles on the surface of the pancake. When almost all bubbles are gone, it is the time to reverse your pancake. When you reverse the pancake it starts grow: DO NOT SQUASH IT! The pancakes must be fluffy and thick! Pay attention to the color of your pancakes, they must be brown gold!

One sideSecond side

When my pancakes were ready I put all of them one one over the other (like a pile) and I poured a lot of syrup on the top.

And The Winner was….

My special judge decided: USA 1 Japan 0
Of course it was a personal opinion! My husband decide that the winners are the pancakes. Although both of the challengers had a great taste, he prefered the pancakes only because they are more fluffy than the dorayaki.

My personal opinion is a little bit different… I agree with the taste, both of them have a awesome taste, but I disagree regarding the winner. I love pancakes, but for me the winner are the dorayaki. The motivations of my choice are really simple: the dorayaky are quick to prepare, I need less tools to cook them and they can cook my dorayaki also without a electric whisk. Pancakes are great… but after I prepared them there are a lot of tools to wash! At last but not least, I think that you could maintain the dorayaky for more time than pancakes. After few hours from the preparation the pancakes are not still fluffy, instead the dorayaky are the same also after some hours!

What about you? Which one do you prefer for breakfast?I suggest to try both of them! Let me know if you will cook one of my recipes in the comment box below.

I hope you enjoyed this post! Next week I’m going to change recipe… no more sweets! If you are curios to figure out my new recipe, you have to wait sunday for next post!

Stay tuned!
